Day Cinque - Piobbico to Urbino

Link to day quattro

Giovanni had gaven us multiple options for today - rides of 68, 80 or 90km.  With sore legs and butts, we decided to cut the 80km route down to 30km.  This would give us both a break, allow us to explore Urbino some, as well as beat the afternoon rain showers.

Still smiling
With Piobicco being a bit more rustic, we had our first "normal" Italian breakfast this morning - a cappuccino and a paninni.  Not much fuel for cycling, but that's about all there was.  We were out of Piobicco at 9:30 in the misty morning sunshine.

Closer up
After a single kilometer warm up we started grinding up our first hill.

This hill wasn't too bad as it was only about 6km long.  Then it was some sweet downhill into a town called Urbania. With it being Saturday morning, the place was hopping.  We found an outside table at a cafe amongst all the families and ordered up a couple of cappuccinos and cornettos to supplement our meager breakfast.

It didn't take long for the screaming kids to drive us out of the piazza and back onto our bikes.  Of course leaving Urbania meant climbing another hill!  On our way out of town we met up with a pack of seven local cyclists heading to Urbino as well.  We chatted for a while, in English, before they sped up.

All by ourselves again

At the last summit for the day
With about 5km to go for the day we reached our second (and last) summit.  From here on in it was a coast into Urbino.  And the sun was still out!

Piazza Della Repubblica
After some quick showers, we were on the prowl for some pranzo.  Knowing that the weekly market was going on we heading up to it looking for some Porchetta (at least I was).  I found the Porchetta truck, but she was out of bread for a panino.  Oh well, sliced Porchetta doesn't really need bread.

As I was finishing up my snack, the rain started,  Again!

So we wandered back towards the center of town looking for something else to eat.  Spying a pizzeria that was buzzing with locals, we fought our way in and ordered a couple of slices, allowing us to get out of the rain for a short while.

As it didn't appear that the rain would be stopping anytime soon, we headed back to the hotel to kick back until it was passeggiata time.

After a couple of hours, the rain stopped, the sun reappeared and we took a passeggiata around town.

The rest of the evening was spent with glasses of wine in our hands, people watching and eating dinner.
